The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring payrolls are processed accurately and on time while maintaining compliance with UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- End-to-end processing of weekly, fortnightly, and monthly payrolls across a varied employee base
- Managing employee lifecycle administration, including onboarding, payroll amendments, and leaver processing
- Maintaining accurate payroll records and ensuring employee data is up to date at all times
- Calculating and processing salaries, overtime, commissions, bonuses, expenses, and other payroll adjustments
- Administering statutory payments and deductions in line with current legislation
- Preparing and submitting payroll information to HMRC, including RTI reporting requirements
- Managing PAYE, National Insurance, pension contributions, and auto-enrolment obligations
- Investigating and resolving payroll queries promptly, providing a professional service to employees and clients
- Liaising with HMRC, pension providers, and other external bodies where necessary
- Ensuring full compliance with payroll legislation, GDPR regulations, and internal controls
- Supporting process improvements and keeping abreast of legislative and regulatory updates affecting payroll
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience processing payroll from start to finish within a payroll bureau, accountancy practice, or in-house payroll environment
- Sound understanding of UK payroll legislation, statutory payments, PAYE, and HMRC compliance requirements
- Experience working with payroll systems, with Sage Payroll knowledge advantageous
- Strong numerical skills with excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple payrolls and prioritise workloads effectively within strict deadlines
- Confident communicator with the ability to build positive relationships with employees, clients, and external stakeholders
- Highly organised, proactive, and capable of working independently with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate payroll discrepancies efficiently
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and other payroll-related software
Desirable
- CIPP qualification or equivalent payroll certification
- Experience managing multiple client payrolls
- Knowledge of workplace pensions and auto-enrolment processes
- Experience handling high-volume payrolls across multiple pay frequencies
